William Smith
Founder | President
“Start where you are and take things one step at a time. It’s never too late.”
William Smith began his career as a mortgage lender. At that time, subprime mortgages and bad loans were flooding the market, and he quickly realized these bad loans were destroying people’s finances, especially those in traditionally underserved communities. Seeing a need that was going unfulfilled in his community, William began learning about the power of wealth creation and shifted his focus to financial planning.
In 2009, William founded Legacy Empowerment Group — now Fed Legacy — to empower federal employees to make the most of their retirement benefits while building generational wealth. He specifically works with minority families who have traditionally not had access to financial education and resources. According to William, there is no judgment on where or when people start their financial journey. He wants clients to know they “don’t have to go it alone. When you work with us, you are part of a community that is constantly learning and growing.”
William is a financial professional who can offer insurance products and services. He graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park and was active in the UM College Park Black Business Association. He is a member of the U.S. Black Chamber of Commerce and currently serves as the business development chair for the Black Maryland Chamber of Commerce.
In his free time, William enjoys traveling with his fiancée, Simone, and daughter, Faybiene. Together, they enjoy finding new places to immerse themselves in the local culture and truly experience something different. William also volunteers with the ManKind Project, a nonprofit that works to help men at every stage of life, and spends a lot of time working with other small business owners to help them make a bigger impact.
